What equipment do I need to begin horse riding?
Author: Phil Adams-WrightHorse riding is something that has been done for centuries, from the days where it was the only form of transport to the wide variety of horse riding styles and purposes that exist today. Horse riding is done for a variety of different reasons today, from farm working to horse racing as well as a variety of other popular sports such as Polo and dressage.
Beginning to learn horse riding can be a daunting prospect as many people hear of the scare stories of falling from the saddle and the life threatening injuries that some horse riders have suffered. Fortunately there are many safety features present in horse riding these days as well as teaching and lessons at stables on how to not only ride a horse safely but also learn about proper horse care to ensure your horse is well cared for and not at risk of injury.
First of all you will normally find that most stables will loan equipment and some items you need to ride, this may have a cost attached so it may be more cost effective to buy your own but there are a few items that you will probably need to buy yourself such as riding helmets. Obviously everyone's head is shaped differently and so buying our own riding helmet will ensure you get a good fit every time you ride. For added safety some riders will wear a protective vest for if they fall or any accidents that can affect the torso.
A large percentage of the equipment that you'll need is actually to do with the horse and the horse's comfort. If the horse is not comfortable then it is likely to develop behaviour problems such as reluctance to be ridden and showing fear or agitation when the saddle is brought out. There are a lot of different saddle varieties, all of which are designed for certain riding styles. It is important to get the right saddle for you, the horse and the style of horse riding being done.
There are other items that are needed for horse riding such as Bridles and reins, these need to be the right size and adjustment for the horse to be comfortable with. Again, if your horse is uncomfortable then you will notice it in the horse's behaviour. If you are able to buy the right equipment for your horse then it will be more comfortable with being ridden and co-operative.
There are many online retailers that can let you buy horse tack online as well as horse grooming kits to keep your horse healthy and maintain its appearance.
